Scheduled ferry service to the inner bay island started about 1870; however, it wasn't until 1878 that permanent service was provided year round. While Casco Bay Steamboat Company was delivering dedicated service to the inner bay islands, another year round company, the Harpswell Steamboat line served the outer islands as far as Bailey and Orrs. By July of 1919, the Depression of the 1890's as well as the economic effect of World War I and the cost of construction of and repairs to the boats impacted both companies resulting in the creation of the merged company now named Casco Bay Lines.
