San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest Chinatown in North America and the largest Chinese community outside of Asia. Since its establishment in 1848 during the Gold Rush, it has been a highly influential and important piece of history and culture of ethnic Chinese immigrants in North America.

Chinatown currently has two hospitals, numerous parks and squares, a post office, herbal shops, temples, and buildings with pagoda roofs. It is a major tourist attraction in San Francisco, drawing more visitors annually than the Golden Gate Bridge.
