The National Christmas Tree lighting ceremony takes place on November 30. A beloved holiday tradition since 1923, the National Christmas Tree stands on the Ellipse, grassy area south of the White House. Surrounding the National Christmas Tree is the "Pathway of Peace," a display of 56 smaller decorated trees to represent all 50 states, five territories, and the District of Columbia. The National Christmas Tree and Pathway of Peace are illuminated each evening, and daily musical performances will be offered by volunteer choirs and dancers on the Ellipse stage. Families can also enjoy seasonal displays, including the Yule log, a large-scale model Christmas manager, and Santa's workshop.
The National Christmas Tree is located near the White House, Washington National Monument, National Sylvan Theater, National Museum of American History, and a number of fine restaurants and hotels.
