The tradition of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree began in 1964 when Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John W. McCormack placed a live Christmas tree on the Capitol lawn. In 1970, the Capitol Architect requested the U.S. Forest Service to provide a Christmas tree. This tradition lives on with a different national forest providing the tree each year.
The 2023 tree was selected from the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. The 63 foot tree has been named “wa’feem’tekwi” by the Shawnee Tribe which means “bright tree” in their language.”
