The tradition of the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree began in 1964 when Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives John W. McCormack placed a live Christmas tree on the Capitol lawn. In 1970, the Capitol Architect requested the U.S. Forest Service to provide a Christmas tree. This tradition lives on with a different national forest providing the tree each year. The 2018 tree was selected from the Willamette National Forest, and will follow the Oregon Trail in reverse on its way to Capitol Hill. The tree will be lit on December 5th at 6 p.m. by House Speaker Paul D. Ryan at the West Front Lawn. The tree will be lit from nightfall until 11 p.m. daily through January 1st.
