The National Gallery of Art was created as gift from Andrew W. Mellon to the American public. The finished building, along with its wide collection of paintings and sculptures, was officially donated to the United States in 1941, and acceped by then President Franklin D. Roosevelt on behalf of the people. Since its inception, the family and friends of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation have been continually committed to expanding the museum building and its offerings.
