 The Smithsonian Institution Building (The Castle) was the first building built for the Smithsonian Institution. The Smithsonian Castle is located on the National Mall in Washington, DC behind the National Museum of African Art and Sackler Gallery. Deemed a National Historic Landmark in 1965, the building currently serves as the Smithsonian Institution's administrative offices and information center. The building also features a crypt which holds the tomb of James Smithson, the founding father of the Smithsonian Institution.
